Champions League MatchDay1
Welcome to the Champions League Match Day blog, where we report on the biggest events circling the world's most prestigious footballing league.
This week on Match Day 1, we share the results and our thoughts on the dominant performance displayed by English giants:Manchester United, and the stale mate between Liverpool FC and Sevilla FC.
Manchester United kicked off the new season of the Champions League with a bang, hosting the Swiss football club Basel. The manager of the Red Devil's (Jose Mourinho) made no mistake in the starting lineup of the fixture, putting forth what is considered by many as their strongest team of 11. With the likes of new signing Romelu Lukaku (striker), and Nemanja Matic (defensive midfielder) featuring, this game was sure to have goals!
The 3 time Champions League winning team didn't disappoint as they came away with three points, and three goals credit to Marouane Fellaini (35'), aforementioned Romelu Lukaku (53') and youngster Marcus Rashford (84') securing the win.
The following night saw Liverpool Football Club take on Sevilla FC at home (Anfield). In typical Liverpool fashion the team pressed the Spanish team from the first blow of the whistle, however it was the away team who capitalised on their first opportunity, with Frenchman, Wissam Ben Yedder finding the back of the net in the 5th minute.
The match saw peaks and slip up's from both teams, however Liverpool seemed to dominate most of the match, leading 2-1 into half-time, thanks to Roberto Firmino and Mohammed Salah, with Firmino having a wonderful opportunity to settle the nerves of the Liverpool fans with a penalty awarded in the 42nd minute, only to hit the right post and putting it wide.
It only got worse for the reds afterwards with Joaquin Correa netting later on in the game and teenager Joseph Gomez, the Liverpool right-back receiving a red card, from two consecutive yellows.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, both teams receiving a point from their efforts.
