Champions League Round 2

Dortmund fall at home

The second round of the UEFA Champions League commenced on Wednesday 27th September, with some tough fixtures, but all eyes were fixed on Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund hosting the La Liga champions Real Madrid at the Signal Iduna Park.

The match was heading slightly in favour of the German team with both sides having good opportunities to score, and a clear hand ball by Sergio Ramos (RM) stopping a potential goal not being penalised by the referee, until Gareth Bale (RM) broke the deadlock in the 18th minute with a stunning volley assisted by Daniel Carvajal.

The Welshman then went onto assist teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to double their lead in the 50th minute. Until 4 minutes later Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Bor) halved the deficit.

The match statistics summarised the performance from both teams with Dortmund slightly leading in possession with 53% to Madrid's 47%, both teams having 16 shots at goal, however, as the scoreline showed Madrid were more clinical in front of goal as Ronaldo bagged a second to his name in the 79th minute making it 3-1.

PSG on the rise

The following day saw Paris Saint Germain take on Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in Paris. Another fixture in which had followers and media intrigued as to how this match would play out, given the uninspiring form of Bayern and the big money new signings of PSG.

Dani Alves scores after 1 and a half minutes against FC Bayern Munich
PSG so far this season have scored 5 or more goals in 3 games, so as expected the hosts delivered. However, even the biggest fans of PSG would have been shocked that it took them no longer than 2 minutes, as Dani Alves, former Juventus and Barcelona veteran, was given plenty of time and space inside the opposition box as he breached the Bayern defence and made his mark on the game, slotting it through the keepers legs making it 1-0.

The second goal came later on in the game when in the 30th minute Kylian Mbappe broke away from the Bayern defence, feeding the ball back to Uruguayan striker Edison Cavani who place the ball out of the keepers reach.
The match was put to bed by Brazilian Neymar Jr. (known by many as the worlds most expensive footballer) when he finished off a brilliant piece of play by Mbappe in the 63rd minute.
