NRL finals week 2 review

NRL finals week 2 review

The second round of the finals brought about much controversy over some questionable decision making from the referees and the huge upset win from the North Queensland Cowboys over the Parramatta Eels. Both matchups provided strong competition with the week kicking off with the Brisbane Broncos defeating the Penrith Panthers 13-6 in a hard-fought nail-biter, Saturdays game provided an upset 24-16 win for North Queensland Cowboys over the red-hot Parramatta Eels.

The Penrith vs Broncos game sparked major debate due to some of the referees decisions in particular, the referees decision to hold up the play after Broncos plater Corey Oates was knocked unconscious after running into his own team mate Anthony Milford. The ball was dropped and a Penrith player picked up the ball and was almost certainly going to score a runaway try when the referee blew his whistle and call the play back. It was an extremely difficult decision for the referee to make as he was concerned with the welfare of Corey Oates. Had the referee not made the call and the game played on the panthers would have scored a try and could have ended the game with a much different result. The loss ultimately lead to the end of the Panthers season which may be why it sparked such debate in the community.

The Eels vs Cowboys was also a major talking point as Cowboys pulled off an unlikely win against the Eels. Cowboys have been riddled with injuries for most of the second half of the season in the lead up to the finals. They only managed to just scrape through to the finals in the end with many critics writing them off and predicting a week 1 finals exit for them. Parramatta on the other hand were in great form leading up to the finals series but faced the minor premiers Melbourne Storm in the first week if the finals. After a narrow loss to a brilliant Melbourne side the Eels were strong favourites to beat the cowboys. The Eels season has now come to an end after back to back finals losses. Cowboys are now only one game away from the Grand final after beating parramatta and look set to prove themselves as worthy premiership contenders.
